Testaments Live at The Jazz Centre UK in Southend

Contemporary jazz enthusiasts in Southend-on-Sea have a standout afternoon performance to anticipate this autumn. On Saturday, 17 October 2026, the emerging jazz outfit Testaments will take to the stage at The Jazz Centre UK, delivering an afternoon concert that promises exceptional musicianship, dynamic original compositions, and innovative instrumentation.

A Fresh Voice in Contemporary British Jazz

Fronted by talented bassist Mark McQuillan, Testaments represent the vibrant energy of the UK's rising jazz generation. The ensemble stands out in the modern jazz landscape through its distinctive sonic palette, most notably featuring an unusual euphonium arrangement. While the euphonium is rarely heard leading melodies within traditional small-group jazz combos, McQuillan and his band weave the rich, mellow resonance of the brass instrument seamlessly into intricate harmonic lines and rhythmic grooves.

Audiences can look forward to an ambitious programme combining refined composition with bold, spontaneous improvisation. McQuillan’s commanding bass work anchors the group, allowing the brass textures to explore warm, expressive contours that set Testaments apart from conventional quartets and quintets.
