Festival of the Dead at Redbridge Libraries 2026

A Compassionate Exploration of Life and Remembrance

This autumn, Redbridge Libraries host the Festival of the Dead, a thoughtful and creative series of events designed to encourage open conversation around remembrance, life, and mortality. Taking place across two key library venues in late October 2026, the programme offers visitors a compassionate, safe space to reflect on loved ones and contemplate what matters most.

Dates and Venue Information

The festival unfolds across two afternoons in the borough, welcoming residents and visitors to drop in free of charge between midday and late afternoon:

  • Wanstead Library: Thursday, 29 October 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Redbridge Central Library (Ilford): Friday, 30 October 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Interactive Installations by Life Death Whatever

At the heart of the 2026 event are two deeply moving participatory art installations curated in partnership with the acclaimed initiative Life Death Whatever, known for redesigning the dialogue surrounding bereavement and celebrating existence:

  • The Before I Die Wall: Originating as a worldwide participatory art project, this public chalkboard invites participants to write down their personal hopes, life ambitions, and cherished dreams before they die, creating a collective portrait of community priorities.
  • #Unsaid: A gentle, reflective installation that provides individuals with an opportunity to articulate the words, thoughts, and sentiments left unexpressed to those who have died or departed from their lives.

Engaging the Redbridge Community

By situating these poignant exhibitions within community library branches, the festival transforms familiar public rooms into spaces of contemplation and shared humanity. Visitors can engage at their own pace, whether choosing to leave a personal written contribution or simply spending quiet moments reading the heartfelt reflections of fellow neighbours. The festival offers an uplifting, inclusive alternative to traditional seasonal events, honouring memory through art, storytelling, and mutual understanding.
